CEO's Monthly Message (May 2022)

You Are Appreciated Hello API Job Corps Centers: Teacher Appreciation Week is celebrated the first full week of May, from May 1 through May 8, in 2022, and is when you all get the extra credit you deserve. EVERYONE on our Job Corps Centers is a teacher and I thank you for all you do to serve our students. We all (no matter what our position) help our students learn, grow, develop, acclimate, and reach his or her goals. What better way to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week than today…with our first Battle of the Brains competition! Since COVID-19, we have come to recognize and value the teachers who serve our young people and how important they are to all our Job Corps students. I am sure you remember the one or two teachers who made a difference in your life. Let us all strive to be that teacher for the Westover and Wind River students. Please take a few minutes to watch this YouTube video, What Makes a Great Teacher? And the TED talk, Every Kid Needs a Champion. Once you have watched these, ask yourself the questions below: https://youtu.be/g9eUZAxw5Bg https://youtu.be/SFnMTHhKdkw

  • How do I show up for our students each and every day?

  • How can I know what the students on my Center need from me?

  • What can I do to ensure that I can give the most to our Job Corps students?

  • Do I take time to reflect each day on the work I did at my Job Corps Center?

  • Do I have emotional intelligence?

  • Have I made one student smile and feel good about themselves today?

  • Am I open, honest, and real with my students so that we can build a relationship?

  • Do I make everything I teach relevant to my students?

  • Am I a good communicator?

  • Do I share my knowledge, skills, and resources with my fellow Job Corps staff?

  • Do I ask for help when I need it?

May 6 is also Nurses’ Day, and our students would not be able to learn without the care nurses provide. The pandemic has reaffirmed how invaluable nurses are to our students in Job Corps. May 6 kicks off National Nurses’ Week which is the second week of May; this year it is May 6 - 12. Thank you for all you do! From nurses to teachers, and all our staff who nurture our students, you are ALL appreciated! Dr. Wild
